As I suspected the cost of getting the right stuff to do the 8mm/super8 mm to digital is a lot higher than having someone else do it unless you have a lot of footage to transfer.

A couple of threads on this I read gave recommendations for the right equipment to get good high quality transfers and what equipment to stay away from because of poor quality , flicker from poor matching between frames and TV scan, problems with sound if you have films with sound and so forth.
Good equipment runs at a grand or more and you still need a digicam to copy the film so more money for that as well.
cheap equipment which is selling for more than it is worth on the bay doesn't work very well and one pro who used it when it was all that was avail;able said he had a lot of comlaints back then but when the better stuff came on the market he had no complaints.

Any how cost is the key for this.
