Charleston, SC. - Dr. Donald Sheehan, 70, died May 26th at his home in Charleston, SC, surrounded by family and friends.

Born April 2, 1940, to George and Josephine Innes Sheehan, Sheehan received a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1969. He began his 35 year teaching career at the University of Chicago and completed it in New Hampshire.

There he taught at Franconia College, Plymouth State College, and, for the last 15 years before his 2004 retirement, at Dartmouth. He also, with his wife, founded alternative schools and home schooled his younger son and grandchildren.

In 1978, Sheehan became executive director of The Frost Place in Franconia, and inaugurated its internationally acclaimed writing programs, retiring in 2005.

Throughout his career, Sheehan's efforts were ever focused on teh service of truth and beauty, and were characterized by boundless generosity in leading others toward those united ends.

In 1984, he was received into the Orthodox Christian Church, taking in baptism the name Donatos. The study, practice and teaching of his faith became from that time forward the central purpose of his life and work. In 1987, he was ordained subdeacon. A deeply pious Orthodox believer to the end, in his last days he said of himself "Above all I have loved prayer and loved God in His most pure Mother."

In addition to his scholarly work in the field of English and Russian literature, Sheehan was a student of Hebrew, Latin, classical Greek, and the 2nd c. B.C. Greek translation of the Bible known as the Septuagint.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, whom he married in 1966; his sister, Nora Wilson, of Montpelier, VT; his two sons, David Sheehan, of New York, NY, and Rowan Benedict Sheehan, of Charleston, SC; their wives, Tara Mooney and Talia Mariam Sheehan; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 28th at Holy Ascension Orthodox Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC. His earthly remains will be given traditional Orthodox burial at Panagia Prousiotissa Greek Orthodox Monastery in Troy, NC.

Memorial contributions toward the publication of his translation of the Septutagint Greek Psalms by New World Byzantine Studios may be sent to: The Donatos Sheehan Psalter Fund, 1661 Battalion Dr., Charleston, SC 29412. Memory eternal!
