Subject: Hitler's mistake....
In reply to: Fred 's message, "Re: The Story is...." on 17:30:30 03/02/10 Tue

I think Hitler made two very big mistakes during the war. His
first was underestimating the value of air power. Hitler viewed air power strictly as a means supporting troops on the ground. Consequently, the Luftwaffe never had a long range strategic bomber force. The were certainly capable of building 4 engine long range bombers in numbers but they never did despite many arguments in favour of them. Hitler and
Göring never took the issue seriously and felt that light and
medium twin engine bombers were better suited for their needs.
But these smaller bombers lacked the range and payload capacity to knock out industrial sites in both the UK and Soviet Union. They could bomb London and lay waste there, but London wasn't an industrial centre. When the Soviet Union was invaded in June 1941, the Soviets quickly moved their industrial sites beyond the Ural Mountains and out of reach of the Germans. The other mistake was invading the Soviet Union before the war in the west was ended. Had Hitler waited until Britain had either capitulated or sued
for peace then he could have commited all his forces in the
east and perhaps forced Stalin to sue for peace.
