We each took tasks; mine was the yield tax (taxes on logging), another took the roads, and the third selectperson took something else, can't remember. Then there were the collective tasks such as reviewing expenses, signing checks, listening to townsfolk, approving building permits. Fun stuff. Haha.

I'll never forget the night loggers came to a meeting about clear cutting, and they all lined up around the room, arms crossed over their chests...grim looks on their faces. It turned out okay, but it was a little intimidating at first.

Then there was the time a couple who apparently had not a lot to do, rode around town, and saw a house with a newly constructed porch on the front that they figured was too close to the road, violating a setback. I was charged with handling this, so I read up on setbacks, saw that the rules said something like a minimum of 25' from the center of the road. Out I went to have a look, and saw right away there was a problem. Not with the porch, but determining just where the 'center' of the road was, since the edges meandered here and there and back again. I took out my tape measure, chose a road center and measured up. "looks close enough to me" I said, and reported back. Nosy couple wasn't very pleased with me, but so what. Can't please all the people all the time....
