Yeah that uestion of just where something happens to be comes up a lot with " riural or older locations.
The lake where I live was a planned community with a map and definate roads layed out with lots defined on it. But when it came time to actually put the roads in there were these big honkin' trees that kept showing up in the right of way where the map said the road should be. since this was a summer community and the roads were oiled dirt at the time Gus Mackey who worked for the community used the road grader to make the roads and went around the big trees rather than trying to go through them ' So some of the roads are at the edge of the right of way and some in the middle and some sort of meander around where there used to be those big trees when the map shows a straight road. Anyhow except for benchmarks that were put in when the community was layed out that sort of disappeared under roads when they were paved or in landscaping or whatever that can no longer be found there were few real recognizable edges to the roads to work from
My lot was one of the first and the corner stakes have been ther since 1927 when my grandfather who was one of the founders had the lot first surveyed. there are also a few " hidden " marks put in by the original surveyers when they were doing survey work after the ommunity was being developed with houses going up. My neighbor across the street diagonally has a wall that was put up by the original resident and there is a mark on the wall incised into a rock which when triangulated with the nearby fire hydrant can be used to locate the center of the road at the side line of the connecting road ( there is now a marker in the road for that spot so first real benchmark since the originals disappeared )
To shorten the story there were also setbacks in the deeds before the town had any zoning laws ( 25 feet from the road, fifteen from the back line and I think ten from the sidelines ) . Now of course the town zoning laws set the limits so those are outdated though similar to the present ones the town decided on.
Local government is by selectmen with a mayor whom I think is selected by them from their membership ( gotta ask the former mayor who lives here about that to be sure )
Members of the town board serve on or as chair of various comittees for things like zoning and so forth and there is and has been for decades a number of town employees for the everyday operation like the tax collector , shared ( with other towns ) town engineer and so forth.
The more a town gets developed or trys to avoid being developed the more people it takes to either do or stop things from happening.
Small board sounds like a dream to me since not just the town ( who is ok ) but also you get involved with county and state government and agencies whenever you try to do anything down this way.
