There's a lot of stuff I didn't mention Nancy all I was putting out there was preliminary info as a start.
I was there during the anti war years as well as the early morning " bust " that was more a political move than a legitimate excercise of government prerogatives ( as I remember it they made one " bust " that stuck and it was more like an episode of the keystone cops than a real morning raid ) . I was also there in the aftermath when the board of trustees asked for the " loyalty oath " from the professors and staff and lived through the resulting changes in teaching staff when the requirement was rejected.
In many ways there were problems of the time frame as well as those of a financial nature and the college kept evolving as a result. It was both more flexible and more structured at the same time . There were options that could tailor the college experience to the individual student that were not normally available in an istitution of higher learning and an adaptable academic community that was not averse to taking some chances and stepping out of the box.

The on campus experience was also a lot different than most such colleges of the time and the community government concept of which the academic standared comittee was one aspect afforded more student participation than most of our generation was given at the time.

The decision to use the " Oxford style " educational model was the initial change from structured academia and much of the FC experience stemmed from that choice.

Sure would be nice if some of the early years people would step up and talk about that portion of the history.
For example the England program and the more New England tone of the early years. It would have been nice had I taken Al Catherons Small Wood Lot Management course and I never even saw the Sugar Shack where students apparently made Maple sugar in the early years though of course while I was there Elliot Colemans Organic Farming course was in the curriculum before he moved on to Maine as did Al Catheron eventually.
