I think the reason for the college's demise is a bit more
complex than the end of the hippie era. Changing demographics and the failure of the college to fully adapt to
these changes certainly was a major factor, but internal strife and mismanagement was a major factor as well. Franconia's strengths were in the fine and performing arts and
it was those programmes that created most of the college's residential enrollment. When the final administration of the college decided to sacrafice the residential arts programmes
in favour of non-residential socio/political programmes, residential enrollment dried up and the expected influx of non-residential students never occured. It was residential
enrollment that had basically kept the college's fiscal pumps primed, once that was gone, the college was no longer sustainable.
