Have not been out that way since the sixties but if you are taking that route and have the time try and go by the road that passes the Tonto rim . I forget the name or number but it was a great road all dirt and had pull off spots so trucks could pass each other.
Also not a biggie but if you pass the salt river canyon take the time to stop and catch the views.

The south rim has more to look at than the north rim but is also a lot more tourista territory. North rim was harder to get to and was best approaached from the north coming back rather than going out when I was out that way.
Actual into the canyon stuff is on a long waiting list these days not like back then when you could get there and find a place to stay and maybe go in on a day trip or whatever , now that might be worth the effort but is a big preplanned trip of it's own.

One of my high school buddies who once was in the boston college administration went to portland back in the late sixties or early seventies to run an big upscale restaurant but aI lost track of him as well as our mutual friend who went to Oregon to be a partner in an environmental law firm.
Another friend went out there in the seventies looking for a good location and maybe to stay and came back because the economy was depressed and there was really more opportunity back here. WHen he got back the NJ state public advocate hired him to check on gas stations messing with pump reading because he still had oregon plates on his corvair corsa and they would think he was from out of the state so might be more inclined to cheat him if they were doing that.

Lots of great scenery on that route and the views are spectacular in some places.

Oh yeah Amarillo does have a great arts area. I had a hand tooled belt from there for years and wore it out literally.

have a good trip Kelsey...

Bill
