Subject: Travel Advice

I am moving back to the west coast (Portland, Oregon) next week. We will driving from South Carolina. We are going to drive past the south rim of the Grand Canyon. (I am not the type to get out of the air conditioned car to hike in the desert.) I want to know if this side trip is worth deviating from the most direct route to our final destination. Also, are there any "must sees" or "must avoids" on our route ? We will be stopping in Memphis, Amarillo, Flagstaff and Salt Lake City.
