The conservative right wing radicals have been loosing influence over a long time frame. Their agenda probably has lost more elections for the GOP than any other single factor and this has been a pattern that just keeps repeating oer and over again.
For some reason they are not aware that the general population has moved more toward a centrist POV than what allowwed them to take control of the right and puish their own agenda to the detriment of the party.
The trend toward more independents has been such that there are now almost as many indys as there are party members for ewither of the two majors in most locations and they have been the deciding factor in most elections where for the most part they voted in favor of the Dems who are more in lione with their POV than a GOP run by the conservative radical righters.
In case nobody noticed the GOP has fragmented over this and not been a solid block like it was back when they managed to claim control of both the whitehouse and the congress back before they got swelled heads and went into overspend mode.
There was also a movement in the Democrat party toward the center that was a major influence on the idea of change rather than following blindly in the leadership of the radical left side of the party.
So it's a trend toward the center that most likely has resultedd from people getting sick of the blame game and the lack of actual results comong out of DC on a lot of levels. The midterm election saw a lot of more centrist democrats getting elected to congress but not enough to make any difference yet. The present presidential election won on a promise of change now needs to deliver on that promise.
Not just a change from the GOP to the Ds but a change in how things are done and an emphasis on actual results in stead of lip service same old same old.

I hope Barak can do it and was not just making campaign promises.
