Yes, we have to do something. I agree with you, Dawg. I disagree with Mark because while I can also point a finger at management -no shit! I also then have to blame those that sat on the Board of Directors for their failed policies; especially in the 70's of continuing to build big throw-away cars with low gas mileage while the Arabs boycotted us. It was Japanese cars to the rescue. That began the decline in market share of American auto buyers. Great strategy, fellas! I think if we do a bail-out for GM that there should be some STRONG strings attached to this action. For one, GM needs to fast-track its electric car program and other related alternative fuels. This is in addition to your suggestion that they shed their legacy costs. But I also believe that the union was SLOW to respond to the market change and the obvious decline in GM auto sales (same with Ford and Chrysler). Everyone was at least a little greedy here, and both union and management were far too headstrong for their own good.

We need to encourage the auto industry to expand their hybrid and fuel efficient models. That way they are ready for the inevitable changes that are to come in energy resources and technology. More efficient solar panels are being made and used now. GM of late has been getting much "greener." Let's keep up the pace.
