Subject: The Panther lives....

Here are two videos of Littlefield's Panther being test
driven. The videos were taken at Littlefield's facility in
Portola Valley. The first video is the Panther without its
turret being fitted and the second video is the first test
drive with the turret in place. The first video shows
the interleaved road wheel arrangement characteristic of many
German tracked vehicles of the era. While the interleaved arrangement provided for good track stability and a smoother
ride, it caused considerable trouble on the Russian front because ice and frozen muck would accumulate between the wheels causing them to jam and leaving the tank immobile.
Clearing it was not easy, especially in the heat of combat
and some tanks were lost because the jammed wheels allowed
Russian tanks to outflank the Panthers and hit it from the
sides where the armour was weaker.
Unfortunetely, Littlefield passed away on January 7th after a 10 year battle with colon cancer. He had established
a foundation in 1998 to look after his amazing collection of
military vehicles, but now people are beginning to wonder
about the ultimate fate of the collection. I don't very
many people would like to see the Panther or any other vehicle in the collection being auctioned off at Barrett-
Jackson or the collection broken up like Bill Harrah's
car collection was after his death.
