The owner of the Panther is Jacques Littlefield of Portola
Valley, CA who has a large collection of armoured military
vehicles. There have been several stories aired about his
collection and one show about his Panther restoration project.
The crew of the tank was apparently trying to escape advancing
Red Army troops when it fell through the ice, ending up
partially submerged. The crew was forced to abandon the tank
and set off a satchel charge inside to render the tank useless
to the enemy. The explosion destroyed the turret and the hull
of the tank sank into the mud which helped preserve it. Littlefield had an entirely new turret made for the Panther
and managed to find an NOS turret ring in France since the
original was beyond repair.
