The 124 I had didn't have an electric fuel pump. It had the
1.2 litre pushrod engine that used a mechanical pump. I don't
believe this version of the 124 was exported to North America.
(at least not in any sizable numbers) Fuel delivery was never a problem with it. The biggest weakness in the drivetrain was the clutch, it tended to wear out rather quickly although it wasn't that expensive to have it changed. The other annoyance
was the distributor rotor. The original rotor used a carbon
rod between the centre contact and the blade on the outer edge for static supression. Since the 1.2 litre engine was a
bit of a shaker, the carbon rod would eventually crack leaving you without ignition. The easiest fix was to
replace it with a rotor that used a solid brass strip instead of the carbon although you would have to put the
carbon one back in when you presented the car for TÜV
inspection every two years since TÜV required static
suppressed ignition systems. TÜV was always very
thorough and they would pull the cap to see if the proper
rotor was in place.
