Paying for things you purchase does not account for people who refuse to honor their contracts and their obligations.

And, may I say, it does not account for the present financial contretemps. That was brought on by people who bit off more than they could chew and did things they shouldn't have done, to wit, speculate in the market and call it an investment in real estate.

Plungers always get hammered when the bubble bursts. It's no different now than it ever was.
