I think you are all missing something here guys.

Yeah maybe Palin is an appeal to the younger voter Rs and maybe she gets good reviews once in office as VP and maybe gets the nod for the #1 slot in the next P E.
Or maybe J M stays healthy and gets two terms assuming he does well in both the election and the first term.

Then again maybe the Rs are looking down the road even farther and are not expecting to win the present election but are running McCain and Palin to show just how far off center the other side has gotten, McCain being a known moderate centrist who voted 86 percent with the Ds and mostly against the Rs and the present admins proposals and Palin is someone who came into the Alasks system and pushed for reforms and getting rid of corruption ( too bad you guys don't recognise a progressive any more just buy the D party line that defined re-gressives as something they are not ) .

Maybe O and B get the win and screw up royally once in office while the Ds keep messing up the congress and there is a big reverse the next election cycle ( that's how Gingrich and co won control of the congress the last time it happened thoguh once Newt was out the Rs went overboard on the power trip thing instead of following the reform program he was behind ) .
On the other hand if the Ds win and actually do the right thing ( highly unlikely from an historical perspective as they usually don't ) it could mark a new period of Democrat political activity that lays the ground work for the next reform to clean up the system.

In any event the field of available candidates on both sides was so thin this time around that the Rs chose a moderate ( unprecidented unless you count Ronnie the neoconservative )and the Ds chose a newby with no real record of having done anything and the democrat equivalent of Dan Quayle twenty years later for a running mate.

Sad state of affairs which would be a real disaster if the congress wasn't even worse by a factor that is unmeasurable.

Have fun no matter what happens since spending at the congressional level will keep increasing and your taxes will go up or your job will go away or maybe both no matter who is sitting in the white house.
