Subject: McCain, the french fried politician....
In reply to: Bill 's message, "Re: Election" on 09:22:22 10/28/08 Tue

McCain likes to advertise himself as a moderate, but
he a 90% plus voting record with the Bush administration in his current senate term. Early on, McCain
was proud of his pro-Bush record and mentioned it often during
the primary campaign. It was only after the very term Bush became extremely toxic did he clam up about
it. Given his experiences in Viet Nam, one would think he be
outspoken against administration on the issue of torture/
waterboarding, but he knuckled under and supported the administration on the issue. At one time, he appear to be
moderate on social issues such a reproductive rights
and LGBT rights but he reversed himself on those issues and
threw in his opposition to LGBT adoption/fostering for good
measure. Saying that he would appoint justices in the
Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas
mold also points to him moving
towards the hard neocon right. His only moderation
being that he didn't scream the sky is falling like
Rick Santorum did when the Lawrence decision came
down. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Bush scheme
to privatize social security and claimed social security was
a disgrace. Comforting words for the hard right, but
a bit disturbing for the AARP set.
He talks about the battle scars he has received
from fights with the republican politburo but those
are completely illusory and just small talk he has made to
give the appearance of separation from the growing Bush
toxicity. One blogger wrote that we are basically dealing with two McCain's. There was the McCain 1.0,
a McCain version seen as a moderate centerist although his
voting record never suggested it but the illusion was sufficient to even make Al Gore consider inviting him to be
his running mate. But McCain upgraded himself to
McCain 2.0 and this new McCain is a thoroughly orthodox republican running away from the handful of moderates left in the party. This new McCain might have
given some energy to the base, but a lot of people
don't like what they see and his political fortunes as of
late certainly bear that out.
