LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Zhang Yimou's martial arts epic "House of Flying Daggers" and Alejandro Amenabar's social issue drama "The Sea Inside" are among the 49 vying for a foreign-language Oscar nomination.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (news - web sites) had invited 89 countries to submit films; the number of submissions represents seven fewer titles than last year, when a record 56 countries submitted films.

Malaysia, which is represented by Saw Teong Hin's "A Legendary Love," is the one country in this year's lineup that has not previously submitted a film.

Sony Pictures Classics is releasing "House of Flying Daggers" domestically, while Fine Line has "The Sea Inside."

The submissions, unveiled Thursday by Academy president Frank Pierson, are:

To be eligible, a film must have had its first public screening in a commercial cinema in its home country for at least seven straight days between Oct. 1, 2003-Sept. 30.

The 77th Annual Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 25. The awards will be presented Feb. 27.
