Is any answer ever right?

In math, everything is supposed to be "right" and match up, or else something you did would be wrong. Yet somehow they can't explain negative square roots or anything to that extent. Why? There has to be a number for it. While graphing equations, some answers to equations have a negative root. Therefore, a negative root has a quantity and characteristics. Yet they say it's "not possible." What's not possible? It's right there on the paper.

I think that what is right or wrong is all relative to the person it pertains to. Society has created this perfect ideal image of who we are supposed to be, but what if that isn't who we really are? We all just need to be happy with ourselves, whether that is or is not the "right" answer.

Since that has been said, here's another question: is the idealism forced upon us here in America harmful?

My answer is yes, because so many people become distressed and desperate in trying to attain that which is impossible. What's worse is that advertisers know (or should) the effects some commercials have upon impressionistic kids, yet continue to wreak havoc on kids' egos to profit by it. Even myself, who tries to reject and disprove anything brought by the mass media, has been affected. Usually I have a very negative image of my body, which I know does not fit the "standards." So why do people who fully understand the implications of their actions continue to destroy lives anyway?

"Because they're stupid. That's why everyone does everything."
~Homer Simpson.

I really don't think that advertisers have much ethics of which to speak. Now, are there any questions as to why I want to go into advertising?

Yeah. Are you unethical? You could probably talk to several of the people surrounding you. Though you may not know it, they'll be completly happy to pick out a set of ethics for you. People like that should learn how to mind their own buisness. Which in turn relates back to the advertising industry. They choose to pick out a set of ethics for you, though they do it through what you buy. Now, why do you want to go into the advertising industry?

As you say this, I must say, society has changed its image as to what is right over the years as the leadership, in this case movie stars, change. Now, with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilara, and Mandy Moore out there, people want to be skinny, to be like their idols. Not so long ago, in the scope of the world, women wanted to be curvy, didn't care so much about being big boned or having a little fat on them. Why? Because Marolyn Monroe was the idol of that time, and what she was, they wanted to be.

As you said Katie, people try not to follow the ads but sometimes come up with negative opinions on themselves. I can't say that I haven't felt this way on occasion, because I have, but it's a stupid way of getting people to feel like shit (if you're offended, I'm sorry) and just raise more money for the shrinks and weight loss programs. As long as you feel good about yourself, that's all that matters. From the mouth of an advice columnist, obviously.
