I agree with Regina in that a negative result can give someone a false sense of security. Like she said, the BRCA1 gene may not be mutated, but there are many other factors that affect whether or not a person gets cancer. A person may not have the BRCA1 gene and feel relieved, but may later find that they have breast or ovarian cancer because the BRCA1 gene is not the sole cause of these cancers. The person, with a negative result, could also have other types of cancer. The sense of security provided by the genetic testing can be shattered by finding that you have another form of cancer. A person who has a negative result for the BRCA1 gene must understand that there is still a chance that she may have breast cancer because the gene plays a small role when it comes to getting cancer.
