Janet's desire to maintain an enjoyable quality of life does indeed make sense. She wants to live how she has for years, with the love and support of her family. However, her statement implied that if she saw this quality slipping, she would consider suicide. The burden, then, placed on her family, friends and physician is enormous. They must be constantly observing her, and know how she is truly feeling at all times. Knowing that a family member or friend is considering suicide after learning of the positive results of a genetic test must be a horrible situation to have to deal with. Thus, the important people in her life will have to try to keep her spirits up, and treat her as they always had. If I were the patient and found out I was at the highest risk for genetic predisposition, the last thing I would want my family and friends to do is to treat me differently. I would want my life to be as normal as it alwyas had been.
Janet's family, friends and physician, then, would have to keep a constant watch on her, and really make her feel just as normal as always.
