As with anyone inevitably facing a disease which leads to the utter deterioration of the mind, I also feel as Liz does in that it is absolutely understandable that Janet desires to maintain her quality of life. Her implications of suicide if she foresaw this quality slipping away from her place a major strain on her family, physician, and friends. Not only must they monitor Janet's physical health, but the must also monitor Janet's emotional mindset and well-being. I do not feel as though Janet would willingly place such a burden on her family, so my suggestion to Janet in this situation would be to create a living will. While it could not address issues such as suicide, it could clearly outline that she would want no extrordinary means taken in the event that her survival is in question, therefore leaving her with the ability to have somewhat of a hold on her quality of life in the most dire of situations. Perhaps with such a will she wouldn't feel pressured that her perception of quality of life was only known by her, and maybe she would not ever feel compelled to take life issues into her own hands by comitting suicide. However, her family and friends as well as her physician must be available for Janet not as though they are on suicide watch; rather, as figures of strength, emotional support, and confidants loyal to her wishes to maintain a certain high quality of life.
