For Janet's sake, genetic counseling should address some of these very personal issues. By simply sticking with the scientific part of it, Janet will not understand how to get through this disease and will most likely begin to feel even more isolated and angry. Suicide would most likely begin to cross her mind even more since she does not understand how to deal with her emotions. Medical professionals really need to understand how to deal with a patients different emotions and feelings. If they see that a patient is very angry and guilty, the worst thing a medical professional could do is to use medical terminology to describe what is actually happening and not leave much room for hope. Janet obviously understands what happens to a person with Alzheimer's and she knows how it affects a family. However, she does not understand how a person with Alzheimer's reacts to the disease and how they continue to go on and live a normal life. The medical professional needs to make it clear to Janet that her feelings of guilt and anger are normal, but that if she spends to much time being angry, she will loose the time she has to get done what she needs/wants to get done. The professional really needs to give Janet the strength and confidence that everyone is supporting her and let her know that while she is healthy, she should do all of the things she always wanted to. The professional should also make Janet aware that her family, friends, and physicians will be there for her even when she is severely stricken with Alzheimer’s. A patient like Janet needs to know that they will be cared for and that it really is not anyone's fault that they have this disease.
