I agree with Angelique that the medical professional needs to address the personal side of Alzheimer’s as well as the medical side. Like Angelique said, Janet knows what happens to those who have Alzheimer’s because she witnessed her father go through it. Janet does not know, however, how to deal with the emotions she is currently facing. Janet needs to understand that strong emotions and feelings of guilt are typical when a person is diagnosed. Finding out she has a high risk for Alzheimer’s is in itself a “death,” because Janet knows that her death is most likely coming with the onset of the disease. When a loved one dies, counseling is often a remedy. In this case, Janet needs counseling to prepare for her death from Alzheimer’s, should the presence of the APOE gene along with other factors give her Alzheimer’s. Genetic counseling in theory should not be labeled as “counseling” if it does not address the personal aspects of the disease. Janet needs to be reassured that it is okay to feel guilt and anger as long as she does not focus all her energy on those negative emotions. She also needs to know how to help her family deal with such feelings and how to prepare them for the journey ahead.
