I agree with Alyxa when she said that there was a good reason for Janet to be tested. Since there is a history of Alzheimer's in Janet's family, one is able to presume that Janet may have the APOE gene that causes Alzhemier's. The possibility of having this gene, which is high in Janet's case, is a good enough reason to be tested. I also agree with Alyxa about the stress factor of the sitaution. Even though positive test results fr the APOE gene would most likely cause a great amount of emotional stress to be placed on Janet and her family, at least they are now prepared and can start taking measures before the disease strikes. It is better not know then to be surprised. Also, Janet andher family have the option of seeing a genetic counselor to help with the stress of the disease. I believe Alyxa was correct when she said that knowing what to expect might make the time less stressful.
As for who should decide what constitutes a good or bad reason to be tested, I think that is entirely up to the patient. I did not entirely agree with Alyxa proposal that there should be a mutual agreement between a patient and his/her family. I think that is a patient feels he/she has the right to be tested, then he/she should go for it. At the same time, one should not really consider being tested unless there are obvious reasons for being tested, such as the possibility of inheriting a gene that causes the disease from a parent and the disease has been evident in the family history. I think that is the patient feels he/she has the right to be tested, and has a sound reason for being tested, then the patient is the one who should decide.
