I think you're being a bit harsh here.

Beginning (as usual) from left field:

Wild Bill Hickock was wildly romanticized during his lifetime, and even more since his death. It's impossible to know which stories are true, or even if any of them are true. There's no way to tell exactly how crazy he was.

According to one story, he refused to sit with his back to a door, for fear someone would shoot him in the back. He's known to have broken that rule at least once, in Deadwood, in 1876 ( I think ). He was playing cards in a saloon, and a man named Jack McCall came in and shot him in the back of the head. The wound was mortal. I don't think anyone ever determined out the motive for the killing (the hand Hickock was holding was aces and eights, known ever since as the "dead man's hand").

Here's a more relevent story. Hickock was working as a marshal, probably somewhere in Kansas (as he often did). One night, there was a shootout which Hickock won (as he usually did). His deputy, hearing about it and wanting to help, ran up behind him, shouting. Not recognizing the deputy in the darkness, Hickock shot him dead.

Nobody blamed him. It was dark; Hickock didn't know what was happening, and he did know someone had already tried to kill him only a few minutes before. He acted out of reflex. Unfortunately, his reflexes were lethal - shooting people was his job.

Consider the following scenario: you're in the middle of a fight with an enemy you've never seen before, in a place you've never been before, for reasons you know nothing about. A former(?) mortal enemy tackles you and pushes you out a window. How do you react ?

Buffy, like Hickock, reacts without thinking, and Faith responds accordingly. Fighting is what they do. Considering the history of these two characters, and the circumstances, I'm not sure we could reasonably expect them to behave differently.

Imo, the thing to note is that, in spite of the history and the circumstances, Faith doesn't kill Buffy when she has the chance. Instead,she talks; equally important, Buffy listens - the first thing she says after Willow brings her back is: "get me Giles". She doesn't assume that Faith told her the truth, but -in spite of her statement to Faith- she doesn't assume she's lying either.

All of that said, you do have a point. We know that Buffy repeatedly trusted Spike, after several murder attempts and even the AR in "Seeing Red". It seems unfair that she should be less trusting of Faith. One possible explanation is that Buffy holds Faith, as a Slayer, to an unreasonably high standard - to be fair, she also has high standards for herself. Another is that in the beginning, she *did* trust Faith, and got burned as a result - in the beginning, she *didn't* trust Spike, so his attacks on her are just "Spike being Spike".
