Subject: Random thoughts on "No Future for You" part 3 - Spoilers

1. Faith looks more like herself in this issue – Congratulations to the artist.

2. Congratulations also to whoever “choreographed” the fight sequences. On the show, fight scenes often contained a lot of acrobatic leaps, roundhouse punches, and high kicks, like the one Gigi uses on Buffy. Moves like that look great onscreen, which is why so many movies use them.

Buffy and Faith, however, are working from a different playbook – headbutts, punches to the solar plexus, and 2 different varieties of palm-heel strike ( done correctly, just as good as a punch, and a lot less likely to break your hand ). These are the kind of moves you see in military close combat manuals – simple, short, and quick. The implication – possibly unintended – is that Gigi is a talented amateur, while Buffy and Faith are professionals.

3. I’m revising my opinion of Gigi’s intelligence. According to her bathtub conversation ( I’ll let someone else deal with the implications of that scene ) her parents weren’t satisfied with educating her with other members of the aristocracy, isolated from the lower classes. They isolated her from everybody, including themselves. Of course she has no instinct for what other people may be thinking or feeling – she’s never needed it, since she’s never spent much time with people who didn’t work for her parents. She doesn't know how the real world works because she's never had to live in it. She may never have had a real relationship with anyone at all.

There’s a chicken-and-egg question here: is Gigi crazy because her parents isolated her, or did they isolate her because they knew she was crazy ? Were they trying to protect her from the rest of the world, or were they trying to protect the world from her ?

In ether case, her current situation is tragic, and must be traumatic. I feel a little sorry for her. She trusted “Hope” as she may never have trusted anyone before, and she’s been betrayed. Which brings us to :

4. Gigi is being used by Roden, and has been betrayed by Faith. Faith was used by Mayor Wilkins and is being used by Giles. Giles fears he may have been betrayed by Faith. Faith and Buffy have, at least in their own minds, been betrayed by each other, many times. Faith, Buffy, and Giles have been used and betrayed by the Council. Roden has probably been betrayed by somebody or other (possibly Questin Travers – we never actually saw the body, did we ?). Manipulation and betrayal have been major themes of the series in the past, and apparently still are.

5. Giles has a lot of explaining to do, and I don’t think Buffy is going to like what she hears.
