Objectively, this is a valid point, but Joss wanted to emphasize that Buffy was a lot smarter than people gave her credit for-- she had the ability to do well scholastically, but for varying reasons never applied herself.

My own fanwank is that in trying to push herself away from her emotional ties with Angel, she really did apply herself to her schoolwork, and learned a great deal more than even she expected to.

(Note that even Buffy herself seems shocked at her good SAT scores.)
