Not sure why they can't 'cross the pond' frequently. Ships cross it all the time - really, all they need to do is decide whether they pay for a passage on a cruise ship and stay indoors during daylight or hide in the cargo hold (or in modern times, in a cargo container) of a cargo ship. Wait for a storm to eat and a missing crewperson would be assumed lost overboard.

I think Spike says in AtS S5 that his journey to England is the first time he's ever flown.
