I just feel we need to recognize the true depth of his failings if we are to give him the understanding he needs.

When aren't there extenuating circumstances?

As for Wesley's alienation, where in the Buffyverse do we find our alienation to be the product of the actions of others?

I'm not sure when confronting the translation and interpretation of an ancient prophecy regarding Angel that a "soul mate" is what Wesley needed to look for. Perhaps someone equally knowlegeable in translation and interpretation of ancient prophecy, someone who also knew angel well, who had significantly more field experience, who still had connections to and access to the WC, and who wasn't doing anything right then because apparently he hadn't been invited to Xander and Anya's wedding was who Wesley needed to talk to. Just my opinion. I'm very likely wrong.

But Wesley lacks self reflection. When has he ever got it right on his own? What could make him think, in his wildest fantasies, that going this alone could produce a good result? What life experience informed that choice? I don't see it. I think it was his desire to be somebody, to be important, to please dad. And he got it wrong.

But I give him lots of understanding and recognize that stealing someone's kid and giving him to the known bad people without telling any of one's closest friends is deep in the gray zone. How could he have known?
