Hey, long time lurker, first time poster, and I wish my first post were less of a downer--though its more of a desperate plea. Estimates place Serenitys opening weekend boix office at $10.1 million. Most browncoats had been hoping for at least 15 million. This does fall within Universals more realistic range, but I suspect its on the low end of even what they predicted. And some people over at Whedonesque who are a bit more familiar with the movie business are quite worried about something in the estimates: $4.2 million for Friday and $3.6 million for Saturday. Traditionally, Saturday is the biggest day for a movie--a drop off from Friday is very disturbing, suggests this film hasnt reached many beyond the browncoats.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying the second weekend will probably make or break sequel possibilities. Almost all films experience a drop off in their second weekend, averaging 40 percent fewer viewers. That would kill us. We need to keep spreading the word to the public, and please go see it again on the second weekend. The browncoats carried the first weekend; if we prop it up the second weekend we can buy it more time to reach Joe & Jane Public. If the movie drops off considerably in the second weekend, theaters are no longer obligated to screen it and it will disappear before it can grow. So, please, get everybody who saw it with you this weekend (and hopefully more) and head right back next weekend. The Second Battle of Serenity isnt over just yet, we still need to hold the line for at least another week

Sorry to be so grim, but Im flying kinda scared here. Serenity was so brilliant I want there to be more. I hope Ill be able to contribute to your enlightening discussions in the future, but right now I have to go back and hide in my bathtub.
