I saw several estimates of first weekend box office predictions last week that were in the $16M range so $10M is a disappointment. Also, exit surveys indicate that 44% of the audience were dedicated browncoats (source - L.A. Times). I guess this is no surprise but it does seem to indicate that the movie is not reaching beyond the already committed. I think the only hope is a vigorous word of mouth campaign that convinces newbies to take a chance. Otherwise, if the box office drops off in the usual range of 40-50%, we are probebly looking at a $20-25M total domestic total. Not good for a $40M film. I don't think this movie has much foreign potential, at least not in Asia which is a major source of foreign box office.
I have a hard time determining just how good this movie would be for a novice as I already have a major emotional commitment to the characters. I really loved the movie (saw it twice) and felt that while I would love more sequels (anything from Joss for that matter), The Firefly story has been told quite effectively. As I was driving home from the movie, I felt a sense of closure. I know why the Alliance was after River, where the Reavers came from, and I think I know Book's background. I even think that Mal’s character, while starting out darker than in the series, has been left with a bit of hope and something to believe in. There is still the Mal-Inara storyline but I can live with that unresolved and not feel cheated.
