As far as this particular Metaphor goes, I'd have to agree in general, except to say I feel like the reavers are those that have become so disenchanted ith the bulk of TV that they can do nothing but hate it. These are the guys declaring that anything based on a failed TV show is utter crap, whether they've seen it or not. The crew of the serenity are the Joss fans and Mal is Joss. This is especially apparant (at least to me) in the last conversation between Mal and River:

(This is from memory, so forgive the innacuracies)

Mal: ...Do you know what the first rule of flying is...well, I guess you do since you already know what I'm going to say.

River: I do, but I like it when you ssay it (River becomes the audience, she curls up in the seat and essentially says to Mal "Tell me a story")

Mal: Love...Love is what keeps her flying when she should fall down...(Etc.)

This is Whedon's very direct message to the fans. Love isn't just what keeps the crew together and keeps the ship flying. It's what got the movie made and what will keep the 'verse going in one form or another for as long as there are fans.
