I see the metaphor somewhat differently. The networks/entertainment industry is the Alliance. PAX is the pablum the networks broadcast. The masses of Miranda represent the bulk of the viewing public who turn into coach potatoes and mildly watch anything that comes on the tube without complaint or comment. They are as dead at least from the neck up. The Reavers then are the fringe fanatical fans that literally pursue, wallow in and devour any scrap of anything halfway decent in entertainment to the point it loses all decency. (Okay, maybe that's us here. ;o) ) Somewhere in the middle is Mal and the gang are folks who are just trying to get on with their lives and their passions of human dimensions no matter what the networks and their sponsors say they should live and act like.
