Wash is cut off in his moment of, not jusr triumph, but completion. He is one with the wind. He is staked and crumples to dust like a dried up leaf whose time is over. He becomes wind.

It's a reversal of Objects in Space where River's, 'becoming the ship' helped to ground her within the reality of the ship--it's crew.
