I don't understand the prevalent lack of understanding of Wash's mantra, LOL. It seems perfectly reasonable to me that a pilot trying to keep his ship aloft under difficult circumstances would utter a somewhat Zen-like phrase that embodies that image. "Like a leaf on the wind," IOW, weightless, soaring, unpredictable. Wash is embodying Firefly, as well, well he says "I am like a leaf in the wind." He is one with his ship, also very Zen, if cliche.

And the pay-off of the humour that arises from his so-called "gliding" to a stop was priceless, and of course, immediately cut short by the real pay-off.

It's very much a Joss staple, I think, to cut someone off at the moment of their greatest triumph?
