I don't think "redemption" is the issue with The Operative at all. Within his ethical system, the only thing the only honorable thing the Operative could do would be to commit seppuku.

Unless seppuku is the norm in that system, it is not the only honorable thing to do. The honorable thing to do in that case was to simply stop. The Operative no longer believed in a perfect world, one worth dying for, so he is left to live and reconcile what he has done to the reality that he was shown by Mal.

What's really in play is Whedon's "can't stop the signal". That if only people would see the documentary, see the truth - they would all be converted. That if only people would watch my show, see my brilliance, they would be converted.

Hmmmmmmm now to be at the con where you ask the slippery Whedon that question about authorial intent.
