It seems to me here that Whedon is prompting us not just to revel in cod-poetic beauty, but to realise the outcomes of what we claim. 'A leaf in the wind' may soar for a short period of time, but when the dust settles and serenity sets in it falls to the ground, already dead. Of course, the tree lives on.

I didn't understand the line, and then with a kind of horrid recognition, until Wash got stabbed through the chest like a leaf on a rake. Brutal, but resonant.
