I think if we define sentient as implying human intelligence, perception or feeling then we will find that we are the only ones. But there is pretty clearly, and to my thinking indisputably, a conscious intelligence in evidence elsewhere. Apes, elephants, whales, dolphins all clearly percieve and feel in a conscious way. Spiders are clearly malevolent.

And our behavior is arguably conditioned as much by genetic necessity or training as it is by some free wheeling intelligence. We aren't so detached from other life forms as we might imagine.

I don't think we need to even involve extraterrestrial possibilities to see that there is a great deal of evidence that we are not alone in the "sentient" department.

But that's only my opinion, and I might lack human intelligence.
