Subject: Book's past?????? (Serenity spoilers possible)

I finally got to see Serenity today. I absolutely LOVED the movie.

The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of clues to Book's past. I've been so curious about his character, and had hoped that I would learn more in the movie. Have I missed any clues?

I remember:

Safe - Alliance officer sees Book's Ident chip and provides immediate care, then releases our friendly smugglers with suspiciously little grief.

Various episodes - Book knows much more than he should about weapons, battle, and battle wounds.

Objects in Space - River "hears" Book think "I don't give half a hump whether you're innocent or not. ...so, where does that leave you?"

Comic books - Book seemed to know (more than he should) that the Alliance was close (?). I have to reread that.

Serenity movie - Book says he may never tell Mal about his past (I didn't get the specifics - I have a hearing problem and couldn't catch all of the lines).

I found the OiS "clue" most puzzling. It seemed that book wasn't the nice guy that he seemed. ...but everything else indicates that he is a guy, perhaps with a shady past, but a guy who sincerely "got religion".

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I have been behind everyone here in my viewing of Firefly and Serenity and did not want to be spoiled, so I've missed the bulk of the discussions.
