Hmm...perhaps I should have elaborated on the whole "sentient beings in the universe" thing.

All I meant was that in the Buffyverse, it is clear that humans are not alone in the universe....they have all kinds of companions ranging from vampires to demons to little slug things that suck the water out of you. This is opposed to our actual universe, where it is not so clear whether we stand alone or not.

The relevance to the whole soul discussion was supposed to be that human souls could more easily be seen as special in our universe than in the Buffyverse.

As it stands I don't know enough about science and whatnot to make a strong case for or against the "sentient life out there" thing, so I will agree that it's probably one of those things that has to be answered in the affirmative or not at all.
