But I also agree with Phil Jackson that sometimes you have to harden your heart.
Very true. I guess the trick is to know when to forgive and when to harden your heart. Often, not at all an easy decision.

If our repentance comes from pressure, rather than inner direction it isn't good for much.
Also true. But if someone says “Look into yourself, reconsider your position, be sure this is the course of action you really wish to pursue” then I think this is appropriate. The pressure is to reexamine your inner feelings, not to adopt mine. This is the position I thought Xander was staking out but perhaps I was misinterpreting his motives.

I also think sometimes there is a large percentage of the Buffy audience that hears Xander as "the voice of the show," … Xander is soooooo wrong soooooo often.
I completely agree. I am not one of those that sees Xander as the voice of the show. If I did, I would not really like the show all that much. I never really bought the claim that Xander was the “heart” of the show although that did seem to be the party line. I thought that this was suggested as his function because, with a few exceptions, his sole role (apart from sophomoric humor) was usually one of getting beaten up. Buffy’s suggestion that maybe he should “remain fray adjacent” struck me as an excellent piece of advice.
