That magic *can have* consequences is certainly a view that I hold about the Buffyverse. This discussion seems to be stuck on examples and counter examples stemming from Spike's use of the word 'always', which I regard as hyperbole on his part. It would be better perhaps to say that using magic is dangerous, and not to be undertaken lightly.

I think that the position of the show is that magic is dangerous and can have undesired consequenses, and I don't think that's a S6 ret-con. There are enough examples to establish this, certainly going back as far as S2 - Giles response to Willow even reading magic books is hardly positive. The fact that there are other times that magic is used where nothing bad happens doesn't disprove that.

To make a real world analogy, say I take a walk downtown through some dark allies in the early hours of the morning. Some might describe this as 'asking for trouble', and if a friend advised me against it, saying I was 'always' going to have a problem, then I'd be a bit foolish if I ignored them just because they were exaggerating. If I argued that because the last two times I had no problem at all, then there was no way I would ever have a problem I'd be insane.
