On another note - without the 30 some slayers, would Spike have lived long enough for the amulet to activate
Maybe not. The problem was that it was never part of the plan, at least not explicitly, for the slayers to protect Spike until the amulet activated. Nobody knew what the amulet was for, or even who was to employ it – only some champion bs from Lilah, hardly a reliable source. Angel says something about scrubbing bubbles when he gives it to Buffy, hardly an advertisement for an ultimate weapon. When they first descend into the Hellmouth, Spike says something to the effect that nothing is happening with the amulet. Buffy does say something about holding the line but I read this as holding the line that prevented to ubervamps from ascending into the school, not protecting Spike. Now how this plan could be considered “Bloody brilliant” escapes me. I would have been satisfied with the position “Oh, were screwed, screwed, screwed. We might as well go down with the ship and hope for the best. Maybe the ubervamps will catch a cold and die from our horrible human diseases (worked in the original War of the Worlds and I believe Cordy suggested this plan of attack against the Mayor).” The success of this plan was pure dumb luck. I think Giles said it best to Willow in season six (paraphrasing) “If you jumped off a cliff and survived, I would hardly congratulate you”. I guess now he would instead say “bloody brilliant”.
Despite all these quibbles, I still think Chosen was a fantastic closing episode. I so get it on an emotional level.
