On another note - without the 30 some slayers, would Spike have lived long enough for the amulet to activate ? IMO, the answer is "No" ( he's good, but not that good ). Would it work after he was torn into little tiny pieces ? Again. I lean toward "No". Therefore, I think the slayers were needed - if only to buy time.
