WILLPOWER PART 6: THE NEW WATCHER

=========================WHERE WE LEFT OFF================================
Willow, Kennedy, Xander, Andrew, Dawn and Mitch are eating dinner.
When the doorbell rings, Dawn answers the door to find Giles standing there

DAWN *confused*
Giles?
GILES
Hello Dawn
At the sound of Giles voice, Willow and Xander come to the front door.
WILLOW *happy*
Giles!
Willow and Giles hug while Dawn still stands there, trying to form words. When Willow and Giles are done with
the whole hugging part, Xander takes a step towards Giles.
XANDER
Hey G-man, good to see you
GILES
It's good to see you too Xander... and don't call me that.
GILES
Can I come inside?
DAWN
Of course, come in!
They all walk to the living room where Andrew, Kennedy and Mitch are still sitting around the table.
KENNEDY
Giles! Good to see you.
ANDREW
Yes, it's good to see you.... but you coming doesn't mean we're looking at another
apocalypse, right? 'Cause you always seem to appear right before....
Andrew gets stares from Willow, Xander and Dawn and quickly shuts up.
MITCH
Apocalypse? Again?
DAWN
It's a long story. Mitch... Giles. Giles... Mitch.
Willow stands next to Giles who looks a bit puzzled.
WILLOW *whispers to Giles*
Dawn's boyfriend.
WILLOW
Ok then, how about we all sit down. Giles... tea?
GILES
Yes, thank you.
Willow leaves for the kitchen to make some tea.
It's now a couple of minutes later. The gang is still sitting around the table. Willow is sitting at the head of
the table. Everyone has something to drink. Giles is sipping his tea.
GILES
I suppose you are wondering why I am here.
XANDER
Well, you appeared just like that without even a phonecall, so.... yeah, kinda.
WILLOW
Is there evil brewing?
DAWN
Are you here to stay?
ANDREW
We're going to die aren't we?
Kennedy is just looking at Giles.
GILES
I am getting to all of that and, no Andrew, I have no reason to believe we are going to die
ANDREW
Then what is it? Because you coming here is kinda sudden and....
DAWN
For heaven's sake Andrew, just shut up and let him talk
Giles smiles at Dawn.
GILES
As you know, I've been in London in an attempt to rebuild the Council. Problem is that there are
just a handfull of watchers left.
XANDER
And when you say, a handfull, you mean....
GILES
Nine. Now, the most important thing is for those Watchers to find and train the slayers and the
potentials and to find and train new watchers.
GILES
As the watcher with the most experience, I have been put in charge of the council. I've sent the
others to various parts of the world to train new potentials.
KENNEDY
That is why you're here aren't you?
GILES
Yes. I am Kennedy's new watcher

We are where we left off.
WILLOW
Whoa, hold on! You're here as Kennedy's new watcher? What about Buffy?
GILES
We don't even know if she's still alive
WILLOW
So? Go find her then?
GILES
We don't even know where to look. Besides, as I know from experience, looking for Buffy when she
doesn't want to be found is pointless.
GILES
I think my time would be better spent training Kennedy. She could after all, be the next slayer.
WILLOW
But what if Buffy comes back?
Giles and the rest of the gang ignore this question.
DAWN
Does this mean that you're.... staying in Sunnydale?
GILES
Yes, I arranged house for me to live in not far from here.
DAWN
You're really staying?
GILES *comforting*
Yes, Dawn.
Dawn walks over to Giles and hugs him. They hug for almost twenty seconds before Dawn gets back to her seat.
Willow looks at Giles. She has a look of suspicion on her face.
WILLOW
There is something else Giles. What is it?
DAWN
Something else? Giles, what is she talking about?
GILES
I also need to discuss something with Willow.
MITCH
You know, I think I'm going home. It's been a pleasure to met you Mr. Giles.
GILES
It's been a real pleasure to meet you too... Mitch
Dawn escorts Mitch to the door.
MITCH *sincere*
Well, it's been fun. See you tomorrow?
DAWN
Why are you going?
MITCH *sincere*
I think you guys need to talk.
DAWN
You're probably right. Okay.... see you tomorrow.
They share a quick kiss. Mitch leaves for home and Dawn get's back to the rest of the gang.
GILES
I like him
DAWN
Who?
GILES
The boy.... Mitch
DAWN *smiles*
Thanks
There is now a short moment of silence. The first real silence since Giles' arrival.
WILLOW
So.... what did you want to talk about?
GILES
I think that can wait until tomorrow. I kind of tired. I just spent got here.
WILLOW
You came straight here?
GILES
Well, I dropped off my luggage at my house first, but then I came here.
XANDER
Ok guys, G-man needs to get some sleep. Questions can wait until tomorrow.
GILES
I appreciate that. And Xander...
XANDER
Hmmm... what?
GILES
Don't call me that
Giles waves a quick goodbye to everyone.
GILES
I'll see you all tomorrow.
KENNEDY
I kinda have to work tomorrow.
GILES *smiles*
You mean you have a job?
KENNEDY
Well... sort of.
GILES *smiles*
Then we'll talk then.
With that, Giles walks out of the room and out of the house.
ANDREW
Can I say something again?

Willow and Kennedy are in bed together. They're both awake.
KENNEDY *proud*
Can you believe that? Giles... my watcher!
WILLOW *a bit cold*
Yeah, you got the best watcher there is.
Kennedy doesn't notice Willow's problem and goes to sleep smiling. Willow has a much more hurt look on her face but
goes to sleep too.

Xander and Giles are having a drink in one of the very few restaurants that Sunnydale has. To be exact, they're not so
inside the restaurant. They're sitting outside, in the sun. Giles and Xander are both drinking tea.
XANDER
So, how have you been... really?
GILES
I've been busy mostly.
XANDER
And you're getting back to being a watcher. You did notice that Willow is not liking this, right?
GILES
What do you mean?
XANDER
Come on Giles, you've known her for almost seven years!
GILES
I know.... I'll talk to her about it.
XANDER
Good! Now... what are you going to do?
GILES
What do you mean?
XANDER
Is that a standard-sentence for you British guys? Are you getting a job or something?
GILES
I don't know yet. Maybe try to rebuild the Magic Box.
Xander's expressions changes for a second and then gives Giles a quick smile.
GILES
I'm sorry Xander. I know it'll never be the same without....
XANDER
That's okay. Anya would want you to do it.
Giles quickly changes the subject.
GILES
So, what have you all been doing all this time
XANDER
You know... fighting evil... saving people... getting knocked in the hospital..... the usual.
Giles gives Xander a smile, then he get's serious again.
GILES
Any troubles?
XANDER
Well, there's this guy who kidnapped us.
GILES
Kidnapped??
XANDER
Yeah, he didn't care about us. He wanted Willow.
GILES
And that guy is dead now?
XANDER
Not really. Willow rescued us, but the guy got away.
Xander checks his watch and then looks at Giles.
XANDER
Gotta go Giles, my break is over.
GILES
Aren't you in charge?
XANDER
Well yeah, but I gotta supervise things and all
GILES
Well, I'll see you tonight.
XANDER
Great. See ya then.
Xander walks away and to his car that is parked not far from there.

Giles is walking home. He doesn't seem to mind the walking. He looks around him and you can see
that he is happy to be in Sunnydale again.

It is night. Willow and Giles are walking through the cemetary together.
GILES
You always patrol alone?
WILLOW *smiles*
I'm not alone, you're here!
Suddenly, Giles comes up with his next words.
GILES *serious*
I've not given up.
To any other person, this would have made no sense. But Willow knows what he means.
WILLOW *serious*
It still feels like you did. You know, I don't wanna complain. Kennedy is happy that you're her
watcher and Dawn is glad that you're back. But it still feels like...
GILES *serious*
..like I gave up on Buffy?
Willow nods.
GILES
Buffy is a fantastic slayer and a strong, confident woman. She led an army of potentials to
victory and saved the world many times. I have nothing to teach her anymore.
GILES
But that.....
They are interrupted as a vampire stands right in front of them. Willow points her hands at the vampire and a ball
of fire shoots at the vampire, who instantly turns to dust. Giles continues as if nothing happened.
GILES
...doesn't mean that I won't be there for Buffy. I'll always be her friend and I will be
there to help her when she needs it.
GILES
But Kennedy still needs a real watcher. And I want to be that watcher.
Willow's expression softens as she understands that Giles is right. She let's out a small tear but quickly wipes\
it away and pretends like nothing happened. Giles notices it.
GILES
I still need to talk to you about something important.
WILLOW *still emotional*
Okay
GILES
You are back in college I heard.
WILLOW
Yes
GILES
Do you have any idea what you are going to do after that?
WILLOW
You know, this is going to sound weird, but I haven't really thought about that.
I used to know, but my life is so different now.
GILES
Remember when I said that the job of the council is to find and train the slayer and
the potentials?
WILLOW
Yes
GILES
The other job we have now is to find and train new watchers.
WILLOW
Wait a minute. Are you suggesting.....
GILES
Have you ever considered becoming a watcher?
WILLOW
Well... no. I mean, it's not like you guys have job-openings enlisted in the local newspaper.
GILES
Would you consider it if I asked you to become a watcher?
WILLOW
What would that mean for me?
GILES
I would teach you whatever you need to know. You're possibly the smartest person I know,
I know you can do it.
WILLOW
Well..... I have to think about that.
GILES
I understand that. You...... Vampires!
There are three vampires who surrounded them. Willow aims a bolt of lightning at one and telepatically pushes back
the second one. The third one however, lunges at her from behind her. Willow doesn't notice him.
Giles hits the vampire so it is pushed back. Willow turns and throws a ball of fire at him.
WILLOW
Damned vampires. Can't they bug someone else
GILES
Well, we are walking on the cemetary. That's kind of asking for it. But.. as I was going to say
before the rude interruption: Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere.
Giles and Willow continue walking.
WILLOW *emotional*
Have you ever tried to find her?
GILES *emotional*
Yes.... every day.

Giles is walking through the Summers' house. Giles sees Dawn in Willow's bedroom, looking through some books.
GILES
Does Willow know you're going through her books?
DAWN
Like Willow didn't go through your books in college.
GILES
Indeed she did, but you're not Willow.
DAWN
Willow knows about this. I've been studying magic with her.
Giles gets a concerned look on his face.
GILES
I hope you are being careful
DAWN
I am. So far, it's just locator spells and that spell to help Willow
GILES
Tell me about that.
DAWN
Well, there was this guy....
GILES
Would that be the guy who kidnapped you?
DAWN
Yes, he cast a spell on Willow that made her more powerfull. She turned back in
scary-veiny Willow.
GILES
Oh my god.
DAWN
But she still saved us. Willow found out he did that to her. She wanted to kill that guy,
but Xander talked her out of it. *sarcastic* And as a token of thanks, he split.
DAWN
When we came home, I used magic to extract the energy from Willow.
GILES
That was extraordinaryly dangerous.
DAWN
Not so much. Willow wasn't evil, she just couldn't control the power.
I helped her to let go with some magic.
GILES
You seem to know what you're doing. Just promise me one thing
DAWN
What's that?
GILES
Don't go too fast and don't be afraid to stop if you think you can't handle it.
DAWN *smiles*
That's two things Giles
GILES
Just promise me
DAWN
I promise.
GILES
Good
Giles leaves the room and hears the front door open. Giles goes downstairs, expecting to find Kennedy there.
He is right. Kennedy enters together with Willow. Kennedy doesn't seem as tired as usual.
KENNEDY
Hi Giles, you don't mind if I take a shower first, do you?
Not really waiting for an answer, Kennedy walks up the stairs, past Giles.
KENNEDY *Off Screen*
We'll patrol when I'm done.
GILES *to Willow*
I have something to ask you..

That night, Kennedy and Giles are walking over a cemetary. It's not the same place as Giles and Willow walked.
KENNEDY
So, you're going to teach me things. I can kill vampires already.
GILES
Now do you? Better start killing them then
Giles points at two vampires who are about twebty feet away from them. The vampires attack, but Kennedy quickly
stakes one of them. The other one attacks her, but she dodges his attack and she manages to stake that one too.
All this time, Giles just stands there and does nothing but watch.
GILES
That was fast
KENNEDY
I've never did it that fast.
GILES
There's another one.
He points at a vampire more than ninety feet away. The vampire had already noticed them and walked towards them.
The vampire attacks Kennedy. Kennedy blocks the attack but is knocked down as the vampire quickly attacks again.
We now get a good look at the vampire. His eyes are glowing red.
Kennedy gets up and has an angry look on her face.
GILES
Don't get mad. You'll loose your focus.
KENNEDY
Buffy always said that emotions are good to have.
Kennedy attacks the vampire with the stake, but the vampire grabs the stake and snaps it with one hand.
KENNEDY
Uh oh
GILES
Stay focussed!
The vampire attacks again. He hits Kennedy in the stomach and she moans in pain. The vampire is behind her in
a fraction of a second like they always seem to be able to do.
He holds his mouth over her neck.
VAMPIRE
You loose Kennedy. You're dead.
Kennedy looks surprised. The vampire withdraws from her neck and steps back a couple of feet.
The vampire looks at Giles.
VAMPIRE
You think she learned a lesson?
GILES
Yes, *looking at Kennedy and smiling* I think she did
KENNEDY
Okay, what the hell is going on..... Willow?!
VAMPIRE
Yes?
KENNEDY *smiles*
Oh my god, I really though I was dead there. What was the point of all this?
GILES
The point was that you have to learn that you're not Buffy. You don't have slayer power yet,
nor do you have the years of experience she had. If you don't want to get killed, you shouldn't
patrol alone.
KENNEDY
But you were here.
GILES
And what do you think would have happened if there were five vampires here?
KENNEDY
We would have fought them off...
GILES
..and died. The way to stay alive is together.... something Buffy was well-aware of.
VAMPIRE
See you later
With that, the vampire turns to dust.
GILES
Let's go home.

Willow and Giles are talking in the living room of Giles' new place. It's day, so we know it's at least one day later.
WILLOW
Nice place Giles
GILES
Yes, I agree
WILLOW
I suppose you want me to give you an answer.
GILES
Only if you're ready
WILLOW
I am. I want to be a watcher. I want to learn from you.
GILES *smiles*
You mean that?
WILLOW
Yes, I know that I'm not perfect and that I have to whole killing people thing working against me.
But I think that I can be of use as a watcher and I like the idea of making the world better for
a living. I just....
GILES
You want to finish college? I expected that. And we can work around that.
WILLOW *smiles*
It's great that you're back Giles
GILES
I think it's great to be back too.
