Really interesting thread. I don't know enough to comment on what the breed was in the past. I can say that my dog works on the farm and I've never known him hang back from what he perceives as his job.

A good example of his work ethic would be the following: got him home from the vet after major surgery on his leg, he was groggy, in a lot of pain, flaked out on the floor. When he saw me putting on my coveralls to do the sheep - he staggered to his feet and hobbled on 3 legs with me to the door, reporting in for his usual job, which was to keep the sheep away from the troughs whilst I put the feed in. Needless to say, he had to stay at home but he wasn't happy about it.

I don't know if this counts as drive but I do know he'll work all day when he's tired, hot and getting bashed by manic ewes and never lose his temper or give up.

Frankly, I don't give a damn that he only retrieves to please me or that his obedience moves aren't as snappy as a Border Collie. He's kind, calm, great with kids and protective as well as willing to give any meaningful task his best shot.

Let's not lose sight of the good in this breed!
regards,
Lucinda
