Subject: Does A Boerboel Really Need Drive?
In reply to: Dan G. 's message, "Re: Good List" on 10:58:06 11/14/03 Fri

It would help for the purpose of this discussion to define drive. My definition is, the compulsive desire to complete a given task that is either trained or instinctual in the face of outside influences. Those influences are included but limited to pain, weather, defiance or lack of reward. Every working breed is required by their creators to have this quality or else they are not by definition a "working breed". A sled dog without drive will accept the harness and will pull until he comes upon an obstacle, he will then stop and when he stops he is of no use to the driver. A hunting breed will hunt until he feels fatigue or pain or cold and then he will stop and will be of no use to the hunter. A guard dog will bark and guard until he feel the boot of the intruder and the he will back up and will be of no use to its owner. A farm and herding dog will go the cattle but when challenged will back down, and is no use to the farmer. Does the Boerboel need to by "drivey" if he does not have drive what use is he as a working dog. "Our forefathers required the following from their Boerboel:
During the day the dog must go to the veld with the children to guard the sheep. There he should catch a hare for them to cook for lunch. He should also protect them against all danger that may threaten them. Tonight he should lie in front of the fire at home and protect the whole family against anything that may be lurking in the dark".
He can not accomplish the above requirements, as defined by its creators, without drive and lots of it.
