Subject: Question for DanG...
In reply to: Dan G. 's message, "Hey NDE!! That cut and paste is pretty handy :) BTW...." on 09:10:51 10/16/03 Thu

Dan G,

I will do a little cut and paste myself here! lol Just hope I don't get yelled at for eating the glue again..

You said: "I have never stated what my qualifications, experience and knowledge are as you have. I don't think it matters on a messageboard. I simply put out different ideas that I think spark interest."

I think we can agree that literature, as well as experience, are required to truly be successful in most things. Experience counts for a lot though and I would be very hard pressed to take information or advice from anyone without knowing their experience. Not everyone comes to the boards spouting how much they bring to the table but it does lend credence to their input most times.

I posted a reply earlier and you stated you did not want to misinterpret what I had read and needed clarification. One of the things you wanted to know was if I had bred a litter myself (was I a breeder?). I understood this as you did not know my background or what experience I had and were likely not sure how to take me. So it would seem that experience does matter.

So while we are here for a free exchange of ideas and discussion, it helps to know peoples backgrounds and experience regarding a topic. Bringing about free exchange of ideas should include being open minded enough to listen as well as speak...and if you are going to stir the pot make sure you have something to add to it!

You also stated that you were not addressing the issue of culling to stir the pot, but that prompts me to ask you then…”what is your point here?” It seems to have drifted from the original discussion.

You earlier stated that you have your own view on the topic.
You also stated that you have questioned whether or not it is a necessary evil...what was your answer to yourself?

You seem downtrodden on Dave Harris (and breeders in general) and have made several comments to people which were insulting in nature.

You talk about financial gain and ethics, business practices and breeding practices. I ask you to make your point already rather than turn this into another childish arguement. It seems you are looking to point fingers at breeders and play the blame game here.

You seem more concerned with placing every poor pup you encounter no matter what the outcome. It seems to me that your lack of experience is the reason for this, and you have not realized the “real-life” consequences of such an action.

It is the responsible breeders which attempt to keep pups OUT of the shelters by breeding planned litters and culling those pups most likely to end up in a shelter…and yet you seem to imply that because there are so many good pups out there…we should not further develop a breed and simply help place those mutts that were put there by irresponsible backyard breeders who refuse to be responsible and spay/neuter in the first place!!!!

You made the statement about business and ethics not going well together. Most successful businesses follow procedures and have a quality program. Maybe you should think of culling as “quality control”. (sorry if this is not the most tactful way to make my point, pups are not "sprockets" but bear with me here.)

I guess while we are comparing breeding to “successful business practices”, that we could also venture as far as “qualifications” as well. Breeders should require education and learned skill and be “qualified” for the position as much as any person in the position to determine quality for a manufacturer or such.

Do they really have a good and full understanding of the product and its various uses? Are they qualified to “test” said product to ensure the product follows specifications? Are they qualified to assess potential problems with the product (separate the good from the bad?) Are they prepared to follow procedures when the product fails?

In other words…do they truly possess the education and skill to perform their job well, or are they just skilled at “talking” (read as BS’ing) the rest of the company into believing they are doing more than playing “solitare” at the big desk they were given in the corner office than they really are?

The discussion may have validity as far as discussing why culling is necessary and maybe even cause a few of the newer breeders to rethink the responsibility and the process of placing pups, but if you are going to begin a conversation on such an admittedly controversial subject, please share your personal viewpoints on the matter as well.
