Enjoyed your comments regarding "Appraisals Pro and Con’s." however world like to review some of your points. At the outset let me say conformation is critical in evaluating a dog however what has been used to measure a Boerboel to the standard as failed. If I am to accept the 50% to 60% failure rate of BB coming from S.A. as stated by several different breeders on this board. The South Africans have been using the appraisal method for 20 years. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but if it is, you get my point. How will take time and impute from all. As an example, if all you require is a working dog to just stand in one spot and not ask the dog to move and not just up and back, or around a small ring, a judge can not evaluate a working animal. A judge will unable to test the condition of the dog or the dog willingness to perform and hold its movement when tired and if a dog is tested out of condition it should be noted. If all you needed to do was weigh and measure one could determine who was heavy weight champion by weighing and measuring the combatants.

I agree with your position of the importance of temperament testing in the total BB. Temperament and nerve is 100% genetic in any breed of dog. True temperament can’t be trained or conditioned and would like to know what you mean by "conditioned temperament" as opposed to "genetic temperament". If temperament could be conditioned no dog should fail a temperament test.
A way must be found to test the working characteristics and drives of this breed. and in my opinion it must be mandatory if bettering the breed is your goal. I agree with your position that it should be at the "top of the list" of priorities. Their are methods of testing the protective instinct of the dog without any bite work and it should be done if the Boerboel is to remain a Boerboel.

Regarding schutzhund, it is only one of the tools available to evaluate the total GSD. There is also a show rating and breed survey and a passing hip score is mandatory and in fact a dog will not be allowed to enter a show or breed survey without one. The breed survey is exhaustive and if passed must be done again within one year to get the dog’s rating for the life of the dog. If it is not done again the first time is voided. That is how important the breeders of the GSD values temperament, health and conformation in their breeding program.
